How did our Frenchie obsession begin?

We purchased our first dog, the boxer Frasier, about a year after we married and that was the beginning of what turned out to be an affinity for everything canine, but particularly anything molosser, big or small.

We both had dogs (heinz 57) as kids growing up but neither of us had owned a dog as adults until Frasier.

Frasier was the first purebred AKC registered dog either of us had ever owned.  Shortly after Frasier joined us, we bought two English Bulldogs with the intention that we would show and breed them.

Well, those two girls, Mercedes and Licorice were responsible for getting us into the AKC conformation show ring and our first AKC specialty dog club.  However, breeding Bulldogs turned out to be more heartache than joy, so we decided that although we loved the bulldog breed, we needed to find a breed that was considerably healthier, had less reproductive issues, but was still ‘bully’ in structure.

Leaving a dog show in 1990, I spotted an odd looking, almost black, smallish bulldog with funny shaped erect ears in one of the show rings.  I just had to find out what that dog was, so I waited for the owner to exit the show ring and introduced myself to him. He, Al Hendrix, and I talked at length about his darling little dog that turned out to be a brindle French Bulldog.

When I got home from the show, I told Dave, ‘I’ve found the perfect breed for us!’  It took me months to locate French Bulldog breeders (no internet in those days) and what seemed an eternity to find ones that had Frenchie puppies available, but eventually we brought home our brindle boy, Chevalier, and our cream girl, Boutique.

Needless to say, those two made a lasting impression on us.  Here we are, thirty three years later, and French Bulldogs are still ruling the roost at Bullistik®.

In 1995, I was hit with the competition bug and began showing my Frenchies in AKC conformation events.  In 1996, I joined the French Bulldog Club of America and remained a member until 2008.  During that time, I served as Show Chairman for multiple FBDCA National Specialties.  I was also a member of the regional French Bulldog Club of Dallas/Fort Worth for more than a decade.  I served the club in nearly every capacity during my membership: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Board Member over the many years.  I also served as Show Chairman for numerous FBCDFW Specialty shows.

Although I enjoyed many aspects of club membership, the reality is, if you are a working club member, as I was, all of your man hours are unpaid, and the workload is never ending.

And, more importantly, when I made the decision to continue to breed French Bulldogs in all of their naturally occurring coat colors, both standard and non-standard, it was time for me to part ways with the clubs.

In the years that I bred French Bulldogs specifically for the AKC show ring, I produced over 50 champions that earned their titles not only in AKC competitions throughout the USA, but also Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand.

Although non-standard colors are ineligible to compete in AKC conformation events, the ABKC has no color bias, and many French Bulldogs of color are successfully competing in those events, including Kattleya’s sire, ABKC GRAND CHAMPION Lilac Haze Bendrix.
